In our busy, hectic lives it can often be hard to schedule in some time for ourselves, a little "me" time to quieten the mind. Many of us are so absorbed by our day-to-day lives that we don't take a moment to think of our mental well being.
A number of bloggers write of the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise and, where I do realise this is important, it means nothing if you do not have a healthy mind.
Struggling with different mental illnesses can be a difficult and isolating time, your mind becomes your cavern that is barricaded shut. The outside world doesn't exists, you live within the restraints of your ever-whirring thoughts. It's suffocating and oppressive and in these situations we need a way of releasing the mind, of setting our creativity and expansion of our thought processes free.
When fighting demons myself, something I have never openly spoken of, let alone put pen to paper about, I found the act of meditation and mindfulness a great escape from the perils of anxiety.
To help with mindfulness and self-love I undertake a series of activities.
Apps
Calm and Rituals are my two favourites, guided and non-guided meditations tailored to what you want to get out of them, whether that's a silent five minutes to yourself or being taken through a session geared towards concentration and focus.
Books and Magazines
Reading is one of my most relaxing pastimes, ex-literature student over here, totally not predictable at all. Picking up a great piece of fiction or indulging in a magazine allows you to experience a narrative outside of your own mind, which is more than perfect if you're not feeling wholly fantastic within your own head space. Escapism at its finest.
Baths and Candles
A good bath can be the antidote for a number of the days stresses. My favourite relaxation bubble baths are Champneys Spa Indulgence Exotic Retreat Bubble Heaven and Summerdown Mint's bath soak. They cleanse the mind and the body in equal measures. Candles can be the perfect accompaniment to a bath or the reading of a good book, my favourite at the moment is Seychelles by The White Company.
Meditation/Yoga
Like a lot of the content on this post, many people dismiss yoga, meditation and mindfulness as 'airy-fairy' trash, but the key to having a healthy mind is using it to focus and stay connected to yourself. Using the guidance from meditation apps can be a great warm up for undertaking gentle yoga. As money is limited at present, I use the super-wonderful Yoga by Adriene and her fantastic YouTube channel. Truly calming.
